Introduction
The International Workshop of Energy Conversion (IWEC2019) is organized by Jiangsu University, China and Energy Conversion Research Center, Doshisha University, Japan. For promoting and exchanging the knowledge of the energy conversion, the seven workshops (following up a series of meeting that first, third, fourth and sixth held in Doshisha University in Japan, and second in Beijing University, fifth in Shantou University , seventh in Nantong University in China) are held so far. This time is the eighth and the conference on August, 2019 will be held in Jiangsu University, China.

Topics
The situation of world energy has become critical and new issues are arising in the sector of energy conversion. Many of these issues are strictly related to efficient use or conversion of energies, and the possibility to solve these problems strongly depends on the new developments of science and engineering. Those problems are often rising in new areas of research, such as energy transport caused by flow of mass or electromagnetism and chemical reaction, where new techniques, numerical methods and solution methods need to be developed. The aims of the 8th IWEC are to bring together researchers, scientists, practitioners from academia, research institutions and industries in Japan, China and the world to Jiangsu University to exchange experiences, disseminate up-to-date information, and explore new opportunities in energy conversion. The topics on the 8th IWEC could cover various aspects of theories, analyses, technologies and applications of energy conversion in experimental, theoretical and engineering science. The conference language will be English.

From April 4 to 6, 2017, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) World Congress was held in Detroit, US, where Professor Jiro Senda of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering) received the SAE Fellow Award.

He was awarded for his long-time achievements in the area of spray and combustion engineering/ engine combustion and the implementation of related conferences inside and outside of the country, as well as for achievements in the following academic societies.

■Awards received at previous, related conferences (Paper Awards and Society Awards)
1992 The Marine Engineering Society in Japan Incentive Award
1997 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Engine Systems Division Achievement Award
2001 JSAE (the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan) Outstanding Technical Paper Award
2001 ILASS-Japan (Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems-Japan) 10th Anniversary Paper Award
2002 Journal of Engine Research Best Paper Award
2005 JSAE Outstanding Technical Paper Award
2012 SAE & ISAE Small Engine Technology Conference (SETC) Special Recognition Award
2015 JSAE Technological Contribution Award

■Professor Senda also received three fellow awards from the related societies other than SAE.
In relation to winning the SAE Fellow Award, Professor Senda was interviewed by SAE International TV about his research activities, and a video titled ‘Spray and Combustion Science Laboratory (Jiro Senda, Eriko Matsumura)’ was created and made available to the public, marking the first time a video has been made about such a laboratory in Japan.

■ 2017 KIFEE 9th 2017.3.7-3.10 Kanbaikan Doshisha University

9th KIFEE (Kyoto International Forum for Environment and Energy)詳細は http://9thkifee.doshisha.ac.jp/ 2017.3.7~3.10 Kanbaikan Doshisha University Imadegawa館Introduction Kyoto International Forum for Environment and Energy (KIFEE) was created in 2004 by the universities in the Kyoto region to establish an international arena for multi-disciplinary strategic co-operation to develop a sustainable society, inspired by the Kyoto Protocol. KIFEE has developed into an advanced “process”/arena where people + trust + inspiration create multidisciplinary teamwork cooperation that may solve challenges important for a sustainable society. For aiming to promote and exchange the knowledge of the sustainable society, the eight symposia (2004 Kyoto, 2006 Trondheim, 2007 Otsu, 2009 Trondheim, 2011 Kyoto, 2012 Trondheim, 2014 Kyoto, 2015, Trondheim) held so far, alternating between Japan and Norway, have attracted some 50 participants from the visiting side. This demonstrates not only the interest in the themes covered during the meetings, but also the close friendships made between the colleagues. Within this environment, discussions are held in a very open and productive atmosphere.
