An Overview of AI Projects for Healthcare: From Challenges to Promises

Frederic LI (Senior AI Researcher, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI))

The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen much progress over the past years, driven by several factors such as increased data availability, hardware capabilities and algorithmic breakthroughs. This rapid progress has opened new potential applications for healthcare, from medical diagnosis and prognosis to assistive living. But beyond the promises, practical deployments of AI in healthcare settings remain challenging due to multiple factors such as poor out-of-distribution generalisation, low user acceptance or inadequate supporting infrastructure. In this talk, an overview of various past healthcare-related AI projects related to affect, movement, pain analysis and nutrition medicine will be introduced, as well as the practical lessons learnt from them regarding requirements for a successful deployment. On-going collaboration initiatives between the DFKI and Doshisha University investigating the potential of Generative AI (GenAI) in healthcare will also be presented, alongside its challenges and promises.
