ロシアが続けるウクライナ戦争の映像はヨーロッパ社会と政治を変え、ドナルド・トランプがアメリカ大統領に再びなることへの恐怖が変化を加速します。同様に、もし人民解放軍の台湾進攻や北朝鮮軍の南下、東アジアにおける戦術核兵器の使用があれば、日本も変化を強いられるでしょう。
ウクライナ情勢とアメリカ大統領選挙について、私たちも、この数年間で世界がどれほど変化するか、想像力を駆使して議論し始めるときだと思います。

10年、あるいは、20年先に、自分はどのように暮らしているのだろうか。・・・ときどき、そう考えます。おそらく、母のように認知症になり、父のようにガンで死ぬのでしょう。しかし、ただ死ぬために生きればよいのか？
バイデン大統領が一般教書演説で、どのくらい言い間違いや老人の弱さを見せるか、と評論家たちが騒ぐことは、老人を不当に貶めるものです。年齢とともに衰えるというだけでなく、若者にはない経験や知識、弱者や不幸に対する同情と労わる気持ちがある、と尊敬される老人もいます。

他の記事は、ドイツ連立政権のBoris Pistorius防衛大臣が国民に強く支持されていることに注目します。ドイツは第2次世界大戦を経て、その軍事力を否定することが政治的な権力の条件でした。しかし、今は違います。ウクライナ支援をアメリカに次ぐ規模に増やし、軍備の改善、兵士の増員をめざし、リトアニアに5000人規模でドイツ軍が駐留する計画を進めています。
世界は、若者や老人、富裕な者や貧しい者、思いもよらない幸運、差別、抑圧、抵抗、改革、病気や事故、震災、戦争など、さまざまな不幸の組み合わせでできています。国家・政府がそのマイナス面を抑え、プラス面を促すようなひとびとのつながりを育てるのは、何にもまして重要な歴史の宿題です。
しかし核戦争が迫る中では、自分が死ぬとき、子どもや孫たちについて希望を持つこともかないません。核兵器廃止に向けた、米中も参加する安全保障システムの下で、老人も生きます。
20年先に、日本の姿はどうなるのか。平和を築く具体的努力を指導者たちは議論するときです。
