イギリスの選挙で政権を取ると期待される労働党党首、スターマーが新政権について語るのを聞くと、まるでヨガの教室を始めるような調子だ、という記事を読んで、私は楽しく笑いました。「まず、一緒に大きく息を吸って、重荷をおろす。さあ、希望に満ちた未来が見える余地があります。」（ “Bagehot: Britain’s populist paradox,” The Economist Jan. 13, 2024）
なぜ楽しいのか？ アメリカがアイオワ州の予備選挙でトランプ復活による腸ねん転を味わいつつあるのに比べて、ブレグジットの大山鳴動を経ても保守過激派に従う内閣は、もはやイギリス国民が相手にしないからです。記事は、「ポピュリストのパラドックス」とよびます。
オーストリア、ドイツ、フランス、イタリア、オランダなど、右派ポピュリストが政治を震撼させています。ヨーロッパ議会選挙もそうなると予想されます。生活水準は低下し、移民は増え、エリートに対する不信は高いままです。これに対して、「Brexit党」のファラージが共同設立した「イギリス改革党」の主張は、新サッチャー主義、すなわち、大幅減税、政府支出削減、規制緩和で投資を刺激する、という保守党の以前のスローガンです。
