香港が資本主義（フリー・マーケット）のショーウィンドーと呼ばれたことは有名です。イギリスがEU離脱を決めたとき、離脱推進派はシンガポールやレイキャビクを挙げて、自由取引の成功例と称しました。何度もポピュリズムと市場改革が失敗したアルゼンチンでは、さらに完全な自由化をとなえる狂気の指導者をピンク・ハウス（大統領官邸）に入れるかもしれません。
最後の香港総督であったクリストファー・パッテンがPSに載せたコラムで、ジミー・ライの映画がYouTubeに公開されていると知りました。

ジミー・ライの家族は、毛沢東の共産主義革命で、人民の敵として富を奪われ、母は強制収容所に入れられた。幼くして路上で生活し、駅で荷物を運んだ。香港からの客がくれたすばらしいチョコレートの味に驚き、楽園があると信じて、12歳で香港に密航した。
ジミー・ライは起業家として成功した。最初の日から、臨時工として働き、工場で食事をとり、工場で眠った。朝、屋台に並ぶ多くの種類の食べ物に感動した。

しかし、市場、自由、法の支配、責任ある政府が否定された事件にライは衝撃を受ける。1989年、天安門事件。自由を求める若者たちに賛同し、Tシャツにスローガンや支持を印刷して販売した。李鵬首相に手紙を書いた。電話があり、脅迫を受けた。Giordanoは中国市場から排除された。
ジミー・ライはすでに十分な富を得ており、引退することもできた。しかし、彼はApple Daily 蘋果日報を創刊する。香港当局や北京政府を批判し、その廃刊まで、民主派を支持する姿勢を変えなかった。

黄之鋒（ジョセフ・ヤン）、周庭（アグネス・チョウ）の香港衆志（デモシスト）など、香港の民主派は何をめざしたのか。香港政庁、立法院、北京政府は、民主派と何を議論したのか。その困難な闘い、複雑な歴史過程を知るべきだ、と私は思います。
