ロシアの暴君、ウラジーミル・プーチンついて。
NYTに載ったTimothy Snyderの論説を使って、The Economistは、ロシアがファシスト国家である、と断定します。「クレムリンはプーチンの人格に集まるカルトであり、1941-45年の大祖国戦争における死者たちに従うカルトである。」
プーチン体制は、失われた黄金時代を再生することを熱望している。ロシアが味わった痛みや屈辱は、暴力によって治癒される。プーチンは、ホモセクシャリティーを憎み、伝統的な家族の価値を信奉し、国家のパワーを熱狂的に追い求める。
この戦争は破滅的であり、リスクや報酬によって行われているのではない。プーチンは犠牲を称え、国民に報酬を約束していない。
「戦争は平和である。」・・・「自由とは奴隷化である。」
ロシアのファシズムは、国民に怨嗟を広める。それはソ連崩壊、西側の介入、屈辱から生まれた妬みと挫折感の混じり合った感覚だ。人びとは、国家が指定した敵に対する空想的な報復によって、その補償を求めている。
ソビエト崩壊後の最初のロシア首相であったガイダルは、2007年に、ロシアに現れた帝国のノスタルジーをドイツと比較した。ドイツ帝国が崩壊し、ヒトラーが権力を握るまで、15年あった。ソ連が崩壊してから15年経って、同じことが起きているのかも知れない、と。
今や、ロシアのテレビで戦争を取りあげる著名な2人は、ナチスの宣伝家たちをスタイルまで模倣している。憎悪と攻撃性をまき散らし、西側はロシアに宣戦布告した、と非難し、全面的な核攻撃で塵芥に帰すべきだ、とプーチンに対して演劇的に懇願している。
高視聴率を記録したテレビ・シリーズ「Seventeen Moments of Spring」は、1970年代にKGB（ソ連時代の秘密警察）が作らせたものが、ナチの美学をロシアの大衆文化に融合させた。主人公のStierlitzはソ連のスパイだが、ナチの親衛隊指令官となっており、当時の国民的な人気男優が演じた。
ロシアの庶民は魅了された。Stierlitzは、完璧なファシストで、同時に、完璧なソビエト人であった。世論調査で、大統領になってほしい理想の選択肢だった。プーチンは1999年、現代のStierlitzというイメージを利用した。しかし、次第にプーチンは老いる。
次に頼ったのは、スイスに亡命したボルシェビキで、イタリアやドイツのファシズムを称賛した思想家・預言者だった。

サウジアラビアの暴君、ムハンマド・ビン・サルマン（MBS）について。
王家の一員であったが、サウジ王家には1万5000人が属している。サルマン国王が王位継承者に指名したのは、海外留学もさせてもらえなかった、第2夫人の子、MBSであった。友人たちは彼が、イラクの独裁者サダム・フセインのようになる、という。
MBSは改革に熱心で、しかも短気であった。その象徴が女性の社会進出だ。ワッハービズムの宗教警察を抑えて、投石による処刑や強制的な結婚を批判し、女性は自動車を運転し、旅行し、病院に行き、男性の親族が同意しなくても離婚できるようになった。
MBSは、王国にスポーツやドラッグを持ち込んだ。東欧からの多くのセックス・ワーカーが集められ、医療チェックを受けて高報酬で働いた。彼は、フランス、ヴェルサイユ近郊で2億3000万ポンドの城を買った。彼の意に逆らう役人には弾丸を郵送させた。母親と口論したとき、彼女の部屋の天井を銃弾でハチの巣にした。何人の妻がいるか、わからないが、公式には1人の妻であるSaraをひどく打ちのめして、彼女のメンタル・ケアが必要だった。こうした話の真偽をロンドンのサウジ大使館に質すと、事実無根であり、MBSには敵が多く、意図的な偽情報が流されている、という。

サウジの体制を批判していたジャーナリスト、ジャマル・カショギは、トルコのサウジ大使館に立ち寄ったとき、そのままリヤドから派遣された実行犯たちに殺害され、死体は骨まで砕いてトイレに流された。トルコの秘密警察、後には国連の調査で、実行犯たちが特定された。
MBSは責任を認めたが、殺害命令を出していない、と主張している。

バイデンは、カショギ殺害でMBSを非難し、両国関係は最悪の状態になった。しかし、殺害事件から数週間後、2018年のブエノスアイレス・サミットで、西側指導者たちがMBSを避ける中、プーチンはMBSにハイ・ファイブで応じ、隣に座った。
プーチンのロシア侵攻が始まった。バイデンは電話したがMBSが受け取らず、MBSはプーチンからの電話を取った。サウジはOPECの拡大版として、世界石油供給の独占体制にロシアを入れていた。戦争が数か月も続く中で、バイデンはリヤドに飛び、サウジの条件でMBSと会見した。
2024年に、もう1人の暴君がアメリカ大統領に復帰するかもしれない。
