The Economistの冒頭はアメリカ共和党のトランプ支持者たちによる侵食とその醜い残骸です。共和党がトランプ以前の姿を回復することはないでしょう。
翌週、KALの風刺画は傑作です。「1月6日の反政府暴動から1年経って、あなたは共和党をどう考えていますか?」と質問されたトランプは、その姿が巨大な蛇になっている。胴体の一部が盛り上がって、それが象のカタチであるというのは、共和党を丸呑みした、という意味です。
「おいしい。」 それがトランプの共和党についての感想です。

コロナウイルス危機からの主要23か国の立ち直りに大きな差があることが注目されています。The Economistの5つの基準で評価した総合順位、最下位（23位）は対策を怠ったスペイン、22位はBrexitを経たイギリス、日本はドイツと並ぶ20位です。
パンデミックに対する積極的な失業者・所得減少者への財政支援、業界・企業への財政・金融支援が行われたこと、感染者が少なく、ロックダウンを避けたことが、優れた国の特徴です。日本は投資が弱いのです。

The Economistは、自由貿易や市場メカニズムを称揚し、そのような政治勢力や思想を支持・拡大します。トルコのインフレやアルゼンチンの債務は、その極端な反対物です。容赦なく攻撃しています。
確かに、インフレが高まっているトルコで、エルドアンは高金利がインフレにつながる、という自説を押し通し、中央銀行総裁を交代させて、利下げを強要したことは無謀だと思います。インフレを抑えるために金利を上げるのであって、金利が高いから物価が上がるとは思えません。
しかし、インフレでトルコの通貨リラが為替市場で価値を失っていくとき、ドルに固定して資本流出を抑えようとすることは、それほど暴論ではないでしょう。為替レートを維持できるような国内の引き締め策や、もしかすると、輸出拡大策、大幅切り下げと資本管理の手法で、為替レートが事後的に安定するなら、成功するかもしれません。

チリの大統領選挙で勝利した若い（36歳）左派指導者（元学生運動家）、ボリックに関する記事も、スペインの市場改革を条件としたコロナ対策基金に関する記事も、左派とのイデオロギー対立を強く刺激する内容です。
The Economistの考えでは、ボリックが攻撃した「新自由主義」によって成長と貧困減少は実現できたのです。チリでもスペインでも、柔軟な市場を抑圧し、年金や賃金上昇を約束する社会民主的な改革は、財政破たんへの特急指定席です。そんな政府に資金を与えるIMFやEUは失敗から学ばない愚かな組織に見えます。

ウガンダのコーヒー農家に関する記事も興味深いです。アフリカ経済は商品作物の輸出に頼っていましたが、その仕組みは、国家の管理する市場から、IMF融資条件を契機に、自由化されました。豊かな国の消費者、巨大な多国籍企業、そして、多数の小規模コーヒー農家。これらをどのように組織し、組み合わせるのか、という制度設計次第で、ルイス型の成長が起動します。

メタバースをめぐるバーチャル世界の地主や土地投機には、おそらく自然の限界がありません。何がその基準や変動を決めるのでしょうか? ・・・純粋な、需要と供給。
というより、欲望と正気。ニューヨーク5番街で誰かを射殺しても、私は自分に恩赦を与えられる、と豪語したトランプ式の狂気の拡散が、偏執狂的な快楽や殺戮、戦争ゲームなどを提供するメタバースによって、起きるかもしれません。
