I have carried out psycholinguistic research; My academic interests include reading acquisition, vocabulary acquisition, and language and thought. In particular, I have been interested in the effects of first language on second or foreign language acquisition.

The research projects that we are currently working on are (1) the intertwining effects of first language and learning context on the bilingual mental lexicon, (2) the effects of a cognitive linguistics approach on foreign language learning, and (3) multicompetence: Japanese learners' sensitivity to noun-countability in English and Japanese.
