Subject Registration |
 |
|
Prior to studying in the program of the Center for Japanese Language and Culture and Culture, the students are required to register for the subjects they wish to take. Please note that credits will not given for unregistered subjects. In order to complete the program, students are strongly recommended to register for 10 subjects in the Japanese Language Courses and for at least 4 subjects both in the Japanese/English Language Seminars and the Lecture Courses in Japanese Studies for each semester. |
Examination and Evaluation |
 |
Final examinations (regular examinations) are conducted at the end of each semester. (As for the examination period, please refer to the Academic Calendar.) Apart from regular examinations, there may be given quizzes in the classes, or research papers and other written assignments.
Academic performance is evaluated by the class instructor comprehensively according to the results of final examinations, quizzes in the classes, research papers and assignments, and attendance and participation in classroom activities. The academic achievement of each student is assessed as A, B, C, D and F in the five-grade evaluation system, where A to D is pass and F is fail. An academic transcript lists subjects with a grade of D or higher and a breakdown of marks for each subject in addition to the overall GPA (Grade Point Average) for all subjects taken.

To determine the GPA (Grade Point Average):
- Take the numerical value assigned to the grade you achieve for each subject from the list above.
- Multiply this number by the number of credits each subject is worth.
- Add these numbers together and divide by the total number of credits for all subjects.

Attendance |
 |
|
If attendance is not good and constant, the class instructor may revoke the student’s qualifications of candidacy for final examinations. Three failures to arrive in time for the classes account for one absence, and being late more than 20 minutes is considered to be one absence.
A certificate of attendance rate may be required, when the students apply for a change of their status of residence or for an extension of allowed period of their stay at the Immigration Bureau. If attendance rate is not good (i.e. less than 90%), the above-mentioned applications may not be approved. In addition, students’ absence extending over a long period of time without justifiable reasons may cause to decision of their expulsion from the Center for Japanese Language and Culture. |
